About the WHO Pledge
Our antimicrobial resistance hero initiative gives you an opportunity to fight antimicrobial resistance to ensure that antibiotics remain effective in treating infections and saving lives. This year, we have expanded the scope for heroes into four categories – communities, physicians, pharmacists, and veterinarians.
To learn more about antimicrobial resistance, pledge to use antibiotics properly and safely, and obtain your WHO HERO certificate.
Every year more people become infected with bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics and more people die as a direct result of these infections. We call this antibiotic resistance.
If you use antibiotics when they are not needed you are overusing antibiotics and contributing to antimicrobial resistance.
If you use antibiotics when they are not prescribed by a doctor you are misusing antibiotics and contributing to antimicrobial resistance.
The risk of infection can be reduced with safe water, sanitation, and good basic hygiene practices in homes, health facilities, schools, and workplaces.
