People and objects’ safety in today’s society will be rooted in digital trust, with cybersecurity and data privacy at the forefront. The demand for cybersecurity talent is currently surpassing supply, which is a concern in a number of emerging sectors of technology where the landscape is rapidly changing. Demand for cybersecurity talent in India is predicted to grow fivefold over the next four years, according to NASSCOM. To meet India’s digital skills needs, we’ll require 1 million people to enter the cybersecurity sector; with the shifting spectrum of industries, we’ll need nothing less than a skilling revolution.

Cisco, AICTE, and NASSCOM FutureSkills PRIME established the Virtual Internship Program (VIP) to provide 20,000 online internships in cybersecurity through Cisco Networking Academy in an effort to make skilling a national priority and transform India into a digital talent hub.

Approximately 1.2 million students seek relevant internship opportunities with one of India’s 3,000 engineering universities each year. However, there aren’t enough internships to go around for everyone. Furthermore, as a result of the global epidemic and societal turmoil, this chasm has become wider.

About the Cisco Virtual Internship Programme

To bridge the gap between industry and academia, Cisco Networking Academy offers the Virtual Internship Program to second-and third-year engineering students. This is the first time the virtual internship model has been trialed at scale in India, with 20,000 students participating in a collaboration between industry and government. Virtual internships allow more students to participate in experiential learning opportunities.

This curriculum redefines the value of internship-based experiential learning. In a traditional internship, students obtain information and skills before working on a problem statement under the supervision of an industry specialist to gain hands-on experience.

Eligibility Criteria

Students pursuing BE/B.Tech in the second year and third-year engineering.
Students have a great interest to learn Cybersecurity fundamentals to an advance level.

In this pandemic situation, the VIP is an attempt to virtualize the traditional internship model and allow for scalability. Currently, in the pilot:

Cisco Networking Academy courses such as Introduction to Cybersecurity and Cybersecurity Essentials provided students with cybersecurity information and skills.
Students next learned how to utilize Packet Tracer, a robust network simulation tool.
Following the completion of the courses, industry experts and Cisco executives discussed themes ranging from allowing a global skillset to cybersecurity careers.
Faculty members from participating institutions were taught as local mentors by accredited Networking Academy teachers.

Educating Students on the behalf of the Importance of security and services

“This internship paved the door for recognizing the importance of security to the pupils,” said Kohila, an instructor at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham who helped arrange more than 35 academies with more than 3,800 students for the VIP. They completed not just the theoretical exam, but also lab activities, Packet Tracer activities, and a Packet Tracer project, as well as a presentation presenting their opinions on safeguarding their campus network.”

This program was enthusiastically supported by the Indian government and the higher education sector. We got 26,051 applications from 31 states and union territories, with 19,830 students being selected for the program and 12,835 students completing it successfully. Approximately 7,500 students and instructors engaged in our live polls and Q&A sessions during the live broadcast industry session, which drew a total of 22,000 students and instructors.
